Real experiences from real travelers
The Akumal tour was the highlight of our trip. Seeing three different turtles up close was magical. Our guide was so respectful of the animals.
We did the Cozumel trip from the mainland. It's a long day (10 hours) but visiting El Cielo and seeing the starfish was worth every penny.
I was nervous about the cavern, but the water was so clear and the guide was very patient. It's a completely different world underground!
El tour de catamarán a Isla Mujeres fue muy divertido. Barra libre y buen ambiente, aunque el área de snorkel estaba un poco concurrida.
As a beginner, I felt very safe. The equipment was high quality and the instructions were clear. We saw rays and a small nurse shark!
The 200ft visibility in Cozumel is no joke. It was like swimming in a giant aquarium. Highly recommend the 'Clear Boat' option.
Took my 8 and 10-year-old to Xel-Há. It's very organized and the kids loved the easy snorkeling in the cove. Food was actually quite good.
The small group tour to Chemuyil was fantastic. No crowds, just us and the amazing rock formations. Truly a spiritual experience.
Everything you need to know for your journey
The best time is during the dry season from November to May when the water is calm and visibility is highest. However, June to September is whale shark season.
Most tours are beginner-friendly and provide mandatory life jackets. Guides are always present to assist, though basic comfort in the water is recommended.
Most tours are suitable for children aged 4 and up, but specific 'activity' tours involving rappelling or long boat rides may have higher age limits (usually 8+).
Reef snorkeling takes place in the salt-water Caribbean sea with coral and tropical fish. Cenotes are freshwater sinkholes with unique limestone formations and crystal-clear visibility but less fish.
Whale shark tours are seasonal (June-Sept) and are separate specialized excursions. They are not typically part of standard reef or cenote tours.
High-quality masks, snorkels, fins, and life jackets are included in almost all tour prices. You are welcome to bring your own for personal comfort.
Some tours may require a small cash payment (usually $10-$20 USD) for dock fees or National Park conservation taxes. Check your booking details.
The ferry ride from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel takes about 45 minutes. Many tours include this ticket or depart directly from the Playa del Carmen pier.
We recommend taking a motion sickness preventative 30 minutes before boarding. Catamarans are generally more stable than smaller 'panga' boats.
